Enabling the Canvas + InSpace Integration: A Step-by-Step Guide for Instructors

Learn how to seamlessly access InSpace virtual class sessions from your Canvas course with this easy-to-follow guide.

The InSpace Canvas integration portal gives you access to several powerful tools: your Office, the Student Space, the Classroom, the Chat, and the Dashboard.

Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) where you build and manage your courses. InSpace is a separate app that integrates with Canvas, allowing you and your students to seamlessly access InSpace virtual class sessions from the LMS.

Your institution may automatically grant access to InSpace to all instructors, or, you may need to manually add Canvas to your Canvas Course Navigation Menu.

    1. Open your Canvas course. You'll need to repeat these steps for each course in which you'll use InSpace.
    2. Look at the Canvas Course Navigation Menu on the left side of your screen. If you see InSpace listed there, you may skip to Step 6. If you do not see InSpace, please continue to step 3.
    3. You are now going to manually add InSpace to your Canvas Course Navigation Menu. Open Settings, then select the Navigation tab at the top of the screen.
    4. The Navigation menu is divided into two parts: visible and hidden apps. Apps visible to students are located at the top of the screen, while apps hidden from students are grouped at the bottom. Locate InSpace and drag its button to the visible section at the top of the screen. You can drag and drop the different buttons to reorder them in the list. Scroll all the way to the bottom to press Save when finished.
    5. To confirm that InSpace is visible to students, make sure that you can see InSpace in the Canvas Course Navigation Menu on the left side. There should not be an eyeball icon with a slash through it next to InSpace. You can also use Canvas Student View to preview your course.
    6. Now, it's time to activate the InSpace Integration. Click on InSpace in the Canvas Course Navigation Menu, then click Get Started. Once the integration has launched, your InSpace account is created automatically, using the email address associated with your Canvas account.

Contact your on-campus InSpace coordinator or Canvas installation technician if you are unsure which method to use.
